I’m often asked how I come up with new ideas. There are long answers and there are short answers to that question. Here’s the short answer:

Creation is the cyclical momentum of ‘thinking and doing‘. Yesterday’s work helped create today’s ideas. Today’s ideas will help create tomorrow’s work.

If you’re at all familiar with my blog, you’ve no doubt gotten to know me a little. I’m the type of person who likes to venture out on little day-trips to get into the right mental spot. Building a little bit of happiness ‘to go’ into my workday is crucial for my creative process. Especially during the warmer seasons. The pursuit of the right materials and thinking spaces for the latest two “Absolute” paintings has taken me on a journey that has spanned through woods, over miles of railroad tracks, into an apparently abandoned man-made prairie, and even atop of a 2,000 year old Adena Native American burial mound. Read onward to see the whole process.
I’m writing this entry from a bench in the woods. The bench, nestled in front of a finch filled thicket, is marked with a dedication plaque honoring a local scout troop. It’s sunny and I’m inspired. Well, let’s just say the woods is about as woodsy as one can hope to find less than a mile from an apartment in the city. But it’ll do. Here is a little insight into how a little sun makes for a perfect storm… the good kind.
This past Friday marked the opening reception of the largest collection of “Absolute” paintings ever exhibited in one space. A tremendous thanks goes out to the friendly people at the gallery and to the guests that graced the reception.
