Interactive light, sound, kinetic sculptures & installations by Daric Gill

The Living Machines is a series of interactive electronic and robotic installations that use sensors, sound, light, and motion to represent how living creatures socialize, behave, and display emotions. These abstract portraits focus on less definable qualities, the “soft functions of being,” from excitement and shyness to persistence, nostalgia, and feelings associated with dreaming.

This work is driven by curiosity rather than utility, exploring relationships between organisms and the world. The machines invite environmental influences, often including viewers, to become dynamic characters in the artwork, shaping its actions and evolution.

Lately, I have been collaborating with ecologists, an apiarist, and thousands of honeybees to reimagine biomimicry. These collaborations raise questions about ecology, technology, materiality, and our relationship with the natural world.
