“Absolute: Stillness”, Oil paint on beech wood. 16 5/8” x 9”.

Please join me for The Absolutes: Big Small Stories, a solo exhibition at the Massillon Museum this summer. This show combines selected works that span the whole breadth of this series. It also includes several pieces created on location in Europe, including a painting fresh off the plane from Dresden, Germany. Located in northeast Ohio, MassMu is a local art and history museum. It has significant collections of photography; costumes and textiles; china, glass, and pottery; domestic appliances; and circus memorabilia. The museum belongs to the national museum advocacy conglomerate  American Alliance of Museums and has had backing from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) & Blue Star Museums, the Ohio Arts Council (OAC), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) & Museums For All.

“Absolute: Allegory”, A Modern Fairy Tale

“Absolute: Allegory”, Oil paint on reclaimed wood panel. 21 1/2” x 16 1/4”. 1.9.22.

“Absolute: Allegory” is a visual poem; a softly lit bedtime story of the sun and moon, a meandering journey, an example of the importance of life beyond the current moment. A sprig of crimson winter berries hovers to the right of a 2-pronged branch. The left side of the stick weaves through the circular voids in the pastel background. Subdued yellow and blue geometry hint at the celestial themes of this piece. They are purposeful nods to the interplay between crescent and full moons, an eclipse and the full sun, and daylight and nighttime views through an arched window. Like most of the work in this series, this painting is a story within a story. Read on for more.

I’m excited to announce that the Massillon Museum will be hosting a solo show of my artwork in 2022! Currently slated for the summer months, the exhibition will present works from “The Absolute” series of oil paintings. Located in northeast Ohio, MassMu belongs to the national museum advocacy conglomerate  American Alliance of Museums and has had backing from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Ohio Arts Council (OAC), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Naturally, there’s still a lot of planning and time between now and the summer of 2022, but I’m enthusiastic about the opportunity and wanted to share this exciting news as it came in. More info and posts will come as things get buttoned down, but I’d like to be the first to thank the museum and all of their supporters for the excellent groundwork that they have laid for artists. I look forward to it!

On a beautifully crisp fall evening, friends and family gathered at the Galerie Raskolnikow to view “Sphere Out Of Play”.  The support from the community was gracious, with the crowds pouring out the gallery doors, down the steps, and out of the building! The work I’ve chosen to place in the show is a culmination of my 3-month residency in Germany.

As my time here comes to a close, I’m warmly reflecting on the many new friends and memories that I have made. For those who may have missed the exhibition or simply wish to relive it, the following gallery is a capturing of my artwork and the wonderfully packed vernissage. A special thank you goes to hours of tireless work from the gallerist Iduna Böhning at the Galerie Raskolnikow, funding & support from the combined excellence of the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen & Greater Columbus Arts Council, the Office of Culture And Heritage Dresden,  and guest introduction by Dr. med. Klaus Nicolai. A very heartfelt thank you goes to my super supportive friends and family in the states and my host family in Germany. Martin & Heidi… you are the heart and soul of my wonderful experiences here in Dresden. Thank you!

Galerie Raskolnikow Hours:
Wednesday – Friday 15.00 – 18.00
