Ladies & Gentlemen: I give you, “Absolute: Time”.
The aim of this piece is to explore how time can be mysterious by nature. The background tones gradient from dark at the bottom to lighter in the center of the painting. The thread fades into nothingness as it leads to nowhere. The pendulum that is created sits atop a weathered linear piece of paper, a timeline for the sway of the cherry weight. In preparations for next month’s “Absolute & Complements” show at the Schnormeier Gallery (Mt. Vernon, OH), I’ve been working on a handful of new paintings. This latest painting is from the same piece of wood as “Absolute: Certainty” and is just as petite. Although small in size, it still has much to say. Read on to learn more
Today I’m introducing my newest oil painting in the “Absolute” series, “Absolute: Denial”. Like its predecessors, this is framed and painted on entirely reclaimed wood. This new piece pushes my normal use of chroma intensity a new height. I’m actually quite fond of the result. Scroll through for process slides, including the dresser from which the wood has come.
At just over 4 1/2″ wide, this is the smallest “Absolute” painting in existence. However, don’t let the small-scale fool you. “Absolute: Certainty” has so much to say. With exposed painterly edges and remnants of the pencil drawing underneath, this is the first painting in the series to harken back to its creation. To learn more, scroll beyond the image.
