"Absolute Power" (frame detail)

Detailing “Absolute: Power” Painting

Adding More Updated Images To the Collection

by Daric Gill

"Absolute Power"
“Absolute Power”, oil on reclaimed red oak. 6 1/2″ x 9 5/8″. 6.4.11.

In spirit of my latest few blogs, I’m going through past work and updating my images to show more of the details within my collection. Today’s post centers around one of the earlier Absolute paintings. The lighting of the painting is such that the wood grain drastically changes under the power of light that hits it. Higher powered light makes for a more dynamic transition between grains (as you can see from the images below). Made in 2011, Absolute: Power has a copper serial number that only appears in the first handful of this series. The frame is made from the same vintage barn wood as the painting and is indeed in the exact condition it was initially found in. The painting surface has been sanded to show the warmth of the wood without going so deep as to eliminate the deep rich colors that are a result of many years of aged character.

The Secrets To Finding & Reclaiming Materials

Finding Those Reclaimed Materials

by Daric Gill

As a person who works with reclaimed materials, I get asked where I find my materials a lot. In fact, I was asked this twice today. Here’s how this question usually goes:

1950 Craftsman table saw“I’ve got this project I was thinking about making…. If you don’t mind me asking, where do you find all of this amazing material?!”

This is a very flattering question and I’m more than happy to share in the ‘reclaimed materials’ movement.

Having said that, I’ve found that there’s actually quite an array of motives and goals behind that question. This post will cover the right questions to ask yourself so that you can be on your way to finding newly reclaimed materials.

Recently I was asked by fellow artist and vintage motorcycle motor-head, Ric Stewart,  to join the ranks of artists involved with the current international fine arts exhibit at the AMA Motorcycle Hall Of Fame. This exhibition, curated by Stewart, includes tremendous artists from across the globe and is presented among some of the most exquisite motorcycles I’ve ever seen.

You can find my piece, “Broken Wing Motorcycles”, on display for the following year. Read onward for more information.

Stick Em' Up!

Antique Barn Siding Becomes ToeHead

Check out my latest ToeHead, “Stick ‘Em Up!”

This new ToeHead was made from a piece of reclaimed barn siding that is easy over a hundred years old. After cutting the slat into 3 sections (so I can use it for multiple art pieces), I transferred “Stick ‘Em Up!” using an old school data projector.

Feel free to check out all the ToeHeads at their facebook page:
