As a person who works with reclaimed materials, I get asked where I find my materials a lot. In fact, I was asked this twice today. Here’s how this question usually goes:

1950 Craftsman table saw“I’ve got this project I was thinking about making…. If you don’t mind me asking, where do you find all of this amazing material?!”

This is a very flattering question and I’m more than happy to share in the ‘reclaimed materials’ movement.

Having said that, I’ve found that there’s actually quite an array of motives and goals behind that question. This post will cover the right questions to ask yourself so that you can be on your way to finding newly reclaimed materials.

We’ve all broken something valuable. Maybe it was accidentally denting your parents brand new car. Maybe it was hitting a pop fly right through a neighbor’s  window. Accidents happen — but some accidents are a little more valuable than others. Here are a few times where precious items of human civilization have been accidentally destroyed. Forever.

Remember, some pieces of art are actually meant to be played with or engaged. In that case have the best time ever! However, if you’re not supposed to touch it, don’t! This isn’t just a suggestion made by the crusty people at the mean ol’ galleries & museums. Priceless works of art are often damaged as a result of carelessness, greasy hands, and the all-too-common, “I just wanted to touch it” action. Don’t believe me?…. I am honored to announce that a few Absolute paintings will grace the walls of birthplace and childhood home of famous 20th century painter, Edward Hopper. Now a non-profit art center and museum, the Edward Hopper House holds exhibits and informative courses for the public. The main gallery will house this year’s annual Small Matters of Great Importance exhibit, in which will be the location of 3 of my Absolute pieces. Small Matters of Great Importance is an annual juried exhibition of small works of no more than 12″ x 12″ inches. Read on for more information.

After hearing some positive feedback from the attendees, I was asked to post an article going over some of the information so they could share it with their other creative friends.
