Interactive Airplane Wing Dreams To Be In Space, Connects to NASA, & Glows At Columbus Museum of Art

The Imagination Machine
Installed at the Columbus Museum of Art

The Imagination Machine is an interactive light sculpture that communicates with NASA, is motion sensitive, tells time, and has a feature that can be remotely controlled from anywhere in the world. It is made from the wing of a Flying Flea aircraft, strips of individually programmable LEDs, and the brains of a Wi-Fi enabled micro-controller circuit board. Part of The Living Machine series, this responsive sculpture takes a look at the emotional intelligence of imagination (as displayed by a robot), and how that relates to a more global sense of self.

This wing has been enhanced with new parts and imagines what it may be like to take flight in outer space. Looking up to the heavens, its onboard brains communicate with NASA’s open database using a unique online key. Each time the International Space Station passes directly over the wing, it gets excited and displays a special light show of vibrant blues. When not activated by the nearby space station, a set of motion sensors wakes it up to perform a slowly undulating pattern of pastel colors for approaching visitors. Additionally, on the hour, the wing pulses white, showing the passing of time.

Working from Kaffe Oswalds, Dresden Germany

The Imagination Machine holds another secret as well: One feature can be controlled remotely. From the beginning stages of this piece, I knew that I’d be working abroad during its inaugural debut. It is built to be globally interactive, both from space and from the ground. Just now, I used my phone to say ‘hello’ to the sculpture floating in the museum in Ohio, USA, from where I sit…  a beautiful cafe bistro in Germany.  This remote access has been intentionally designed so that I can share the experience with others I meet abroad. With the tap of a button on my phone, newly made friends can communicate with the sculpture and to the people visiting it at the museum.

Awarded Resource Grant For Interactive Winged Light Sculpture

Awarded Resource Grant For Winged Interactive Light Sculpture

by Daric Gill

I am very happy to announce that I’ve received an Artist Resource Grant by the Greater Columbus Arts Council for 2019. This grant will go towards my most ambitious project to date, an interactive light sculpture made from robotics and a 17 foot wide reclaimed airplane wing. The wing will proudly be on display in the annual Greater Columbus exhibition June 14 to Sept. 29, 2019 at the Columbus Museum of Art. The exhibition will feature works made by myself and other recent recipients of the prestigious Visual Arts Fellowship.

While my project isn’t exactly top-secret, I am trying to keep some of the surprises hush-hush… for now. Let’s just say it involves you, NASA, and some beautiful lights. Keep an eye out for updates as the work on this interactive piece progresses!

I am grateful for your support. Thank you!

Special Thanks to Greater Columbus Arts Council, The City of Columbus,  & The Columbus Museum Of Art!

I’m super excited to announce that Issue 6 of ARTIST TALK MAGAZINE has been published and I am a featured artist with a 6-page spread! ARTIST TALK MAGAZINE is a quarterly magazine, originating from the United Kingdom and features Artists from all across the globe. It is a magazine for everyone and is written by Artists. The main focus of the magazine is to showcase Artists and to give them a chance to share, in more depth, the work they produce. It aims to showcase a wide range of work, inspired by many different influences.

So far, I’ve been really impressed with how slick the online version of the magazine is. You can view it online and purchase a physical copy of any issue here. I’ve already purchased a couple copies for myself and eagerly await their arrival.

Special thanks to Grant Milne who created such an amazing platform for artists!

How I Made “The Shy Machine”: An Interactive Kinetic Light Sculpture That Moves, Learns, & Reacts

by Daric Gill

{Time-Lapse Video of Process Above}

The Shy Machine is a motion activated, sound reactive, environmentally adaptive, kinetic light sculpture. As its name would suggest, this robot is shy. The two halves of this 12-sided geometric form open and close depending on the noise levels in the environment. Vibrant lights pulse from within according to volume in the room. The insides are packed with electronic brains, lights, and sensors to make this happen. In this article, you can explore the build process from start-to-finish.
