Ohio Arts Council Celebrates Artists Selected In Governor’s Office Loan Program

Artwork Loan Program Visitation

by Daric Gill

OAC-Gov-officesLast summer I announced that two of my paintings had been selected as part of Ohio Arts Council loan program at the 32 story Verne Riffe Center for Government & The Arts. As part of the 2015-2017 Ohio Governor’s Office and Residence Loan Program, all selected artwork has been carefully chosen by the Ohio Arts Council and will be on extended loan for 2 years at either the Governor’s Office or his residence. Recently, I was invited to an afternoon celebration thrown for the artists chosen for this award. After the swanky gathering at the Governor’s Mansion (full of represented art as well), artist were invited to tour the art on loan at the Riffe Center. My pieces are located in a sitting area within the offices.

“Since 1985 the OAC has assisted in placing artwork by Ohio artists and from the collections of Ohio museums and cultural institutions in the Governor’s Residence and throughout the Governor’s offices.” – OAC

Constructing An “Absolute: Moment” In Latest Painting

The Painting, Process, & Background to “Absolute: Moment”

Snow gloves, tank tops, and an umbrella?  Where I live, that can only mean one thing: the seasons are changing. Spring is fast approaching. The 30º shifts and seasonal mixes each day make getting dressed seem more like a daily challenge to design a functional superhero costume. A balancing side effect of this spectacular shift in weather is the equally impressive change in environment.

Crocuses wake up through icy snow crystals. The deciduous trees, with their angrily wild stick-bones, soften due to crimson red buds and fluorescent green leaflets. There’s a change that happens; a release of life back into the world as if a clinched fist has loosened, allowing the life-blood to flow again. As if constantly looking at one’s watch while waiting for company, I actively search for that moment when I can find spring in the world. My latest painting, “Absolute: Moment” searches for that transitional happening, where the old is reborn into something new.

This piece has been selected for this year’s Art for Life benefit. Recently this piece has been dropped off at the prestigious Pizzuti Collection Museum and may travel to several other locations before landing at the Columbus Museum Of Art where it will be auctioned off in support of two worthy causes. Read on to find out more about this piece.

Framing Out An Early Piece

New Frame For Early Piece

by Daric Gill

Absolute: Force
Absolute: Force. Oil on reclaimed red oak. 28 1/4″ x 6 7/8″. 2.29.12.

I commonly experiment with presentation, especially during the infancy stages of a body of artwork. When I made this painting in 2012 I had really liked the idea of showcasing the raw material that I use as backgrounds. For this reason, I felt that it was important to leave the piece in its raw plank shape and forego a frame altogether. Thirty or so paintings later I’ve found that it may have worked at the time, but now the un-framed edges don’t quite fit in with the rest of the series.

This is a great example of how time and perspective can really inform past decisions and hopefully pave the way for new ones. I’ve framed out this piece in a way that is fitting for the cannon of other  “Absolute” paintings and I’m quite happy with the results. Take a look at its new digs.

“Absolute: Change” – A Shift To What Isn’t There

If one was to pay close enough attention, they may see seasonal shifts in the Absolute painting series that run in tandem with when the work was created. Of course, this is an obvious side effect when using natural elements as subject matter. However, I’ve also found that this seasonal shift can give a rich conceptual tie-in that grows as the body of work progresses. Read on to find why this piece is different.
