Daric Gill’s ‘The Circadian Machine’ in Divide Magazine: Issue 13

by Daric Gill

“The Circadian Machine” by Daric Gill, A Light & Sound Sculpture Featured in Divide Magazine: Issue 13

I am incredibly grateful to be featured in Issue 13 of Divide Magazine! Having “The Circadian Machine” highlighted among such talented creatives is an honor. It’s always wonderful to share my work with a wider audience, especially through an international publication like Divide Magazine. I’m excited to continue exploring the intersection of light, sound, and emotion, and I can’t wait to start on the next piece.

“The Circadian Machine” at the Columbus Museum of Art

“The Circadian Machine” is a motion-sensitive light & sound sculpture that uses its GPS location to dynamically change its internal clock & sound + light displays based on the unique amount of sunlight on that specific day & location. It can be activated from anywhere in the world by special invitation. You can read the whole magazine here (my feature is on pages 216-217).

The Shy Machine: a motion-activated, sound-reactive, environmentally adaptive, kinetic light sculpture.

Taking over a year to complete (time split with other projects), this piece has been the most ambitious artwork I’ve created to date. It’s been my goal to create a piece with the specific aim of pushing myself beyond any previous personal limitations regarding engineering, finance, complexity, and conceptual meaning.

A project this involved earned a proportionate amount of planning and quiet contemplation before any work could even begin. At this point in my career, I view this particular piece as the combination of my childhood interests mingled with my adult potential. In this article, I’ll discuss how I came to the idea, how it works, and how I relate to it on a very personal level.

Living Orb Light Sculpture On Display At City Park

It’s been a wonderfully busy summer so far! Along with a myriad of other art opportunities, I’ve been diligently working on a new sculpture that has just been placed in one of Columbus’ City Parks. I’m quite proud to debut The Living Orb, a mixed medium sculpture that has a slowly pulsing white light that activates as the sun goes down.

My sculpture is a part of the Find Me in the Park- It’s TREEmendous project, an initiative organized by the Columbus Parks & Recreations that encourages community members to investigate our city parks in a new way. Located on the east side of the Goodale Park (across from the Pizzuti Collection), The Living Orb is my interpretation of a mini-treehouse. It’s solar powered and hangs roughly 15 ft up in the air. Continue to learn about the making of.
