“Absolute: Frequency” — A Painting Of Life’s Ups & Downs

My latest painting, Absolute: Frequency combines layer upon layer of opposing forces into one conversation. It depicts the oscillations in our lives: fortunate blessings and frustrating blights, life, and death, ups and downs, and seasonal changes. I’m exploring the relationships between how we feel change measured from the position of maximum equilibrium. Each element of this work slides between an amplitude of opposites.

This is a special piece that is packed full of meaning and opportunity. Next year, it will find its way to another country as part of an international exhibition! Read on below for a visual breakdown, process video, image gallery, and what travel adventures are in store.

“Absolute: Nostalgia”, Reaching Inward Through Newest Painting

Absolute: Nostalgia is a deep painting from a deep place. Three ginkgo biloba leaves, yellowed and fallen, arch their way down the center of a walnut panel. Flanking the ginkgo is a set of baby’s breath flowers angling in from the lower right corner. Tucked neatly at the bottom of the foliage is a small black card. Draping down from the top are clusters of vibrant red-orange berries; and fruit from the green hawthorn tree. Subtle color changes to the wood grain show a neatly vertical composition. A gradient of rectangles radiate from the center. Watch how it was made and see more images below the article.

Looking Inward With Absolute: Rest

It is good to look inward with an absolute silence, to find solace during those cacophonous times. For Absolute: Rest, I took a major departure from my normal idea-gathering process and instead developed the painting alongside a short story I wrote.

Absolute: Rest is an oil painting on reclaimed Honduran Mahogany. A black handmade envelope is painted above a translucent geometric ‘X’. On top of the envelope is a leaf from the ZZ plant. Its green flesh is held down by a smooth stone. Each of these elements is symbolic, taken from the short story, Bricks to Stones.

“So afraid of a falling shelter, Man spent all his energy grinding bricks into stones and bones to dirt. These are materials more suited for a garden than a shelter.”

Newest Painting “Absolute: Insulation”

Introducing my latest painting, Absolute: Insulation, an oil painting on reclaimed cherry wood.

A leafless branch is vignetted in the center of the undulating patterns of the wood below. The top half of the branch, sheathed in a coating of white, reaches outward and upward. The base of the branch fades into the background wood. Look close enough and you can see dried remnants of moss on the twig. A deep red-brown color envelopes around the center; its rich color coursing through the wavy cherry wood grain.  Read more below…
