{Feature Video of Painting Process Above}

“Absolute: Pendulum”, Oil paint on cherry veneer, paper, thin ply veneer. 12″ x 9″. 8.22.20.

This piece is for a traveling exhibition to Cuba, New York City, & Ohio slated for 2021. The show, titled “Letters from Cuba, Letters from Ohio”, will showcase artists’ visual & written letters hailing from both locations. It is my pleasure to be among a group of excellent artists who have traveled to & taken part in an artist partnership with Cuba. I’m extremely proud of the friendships (both professional & personal) that this organization has been able to nurture. This piece represents a close communication with the friends I’ve made during my visits. You can see some of my inspirations in the gallery below.

If I’ve learned anything from my previous exhibitions in Cuba & the one-two punch of 2020’s global pandemic, it’s safe to say that the dates & locations will remain flexible until closer to the opening. When that time comes, I’ll be sure to let everyone know. The plan is to have simultaneous exhibitions in four Cuban cities in the spring of 2021, followed by a summer showing at the Columbus Museum of Art, before traveling to New York City in the fall. Keep an eye out for new information as it comes in!

Absolute: Plumb: oil on panel. 12″ x 24″.

Before the pandemic rocked the world, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) announced an exhibit called ‘¡Cuba!’, a bilingual collaboration with the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC) at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Cuba. In conjunction with that exhibition was an invitation to a Community Art Challenge, where artists of all ages were asked to submit work that represented their family, traditions, home, and cultural similarities. I dropped off an oil painting to just weeks before the world saw a global lockdown. The work has been in the museum’s care, waiting the moment when they could responsibly open back up to the public. I’m pleased to announce that COSI is now open and my work, “Absolute: Plumb” is now on display in Heritage & History art gallery. I have several really interesting connections between both COSI and Cuba.  Read onward to see what they are.

I’m excited to announce that the Massillon Museum will be hosting a solo show of my artwork in 2022! Currently slated for the summer months, the exhibition will present works from “The Absolute” series of oil paintings. Located in northeast Ohio, MassMu belongs to the national museum advocacy conglomerate  American Alliance of Museums and has had backing from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Ohio Arts Council (OAC), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Naturally, there’s still a lot of planning and time between now and the summer of 2022, but I’m enthusiastic about the opportunity and wanted to share this exciting news as it came in. More info and posts will come as things get buttoned down, but I’d like to be the first to thank the museum and all of their supporters for the excellent groundwork that they have laid for artists. I look forward to it!

“Columbus In Cuba” Documentary Debuts In Ohio, Heads To Film Festivals

New “Columbus In Cuba” Documentary To Debut In Ohio Before Traveling To Film Festivals

by Daric Gill

CubaIt’s been my extreme privilege to have been included among a group of artists who traveled to Cuba on an artist exchange and again for an international exhibition. Last spring, we were invited to exhibit in the 13th Havana Biennial and ConnectArt in Havana and Matanzas. Among the group of artists were two Ohio filmmakers, Nikki and Matt Swift. Together they created a documentary film that will soon debut in Columbus before traveling to other film festivals.

Columbus in Cuba will make its debut with a free screening at Gateway Film Center on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m., followed by a free screening at the Columbus Museum of Art, in conjunction with (my undergrad alma mater) Columbus College of Art & Design, on Thursday, Jan. 16. with a reception at 5:30 p.m., a showing at 6 p.m., and a Q&A to follow. You can book tickets online for film at the CMA (click on their name above to go to their website).
