New Interactive Light + Sound Sculpture Shifts Time: “The Circadian Machine”

“The Circadian Machine”

After 10+ months of engineering, coding, and building, I’m ready to debut my latest interactive robotic sculpture! “The Circadian Machine” is a fully mirrored geometric pod that can sense motion, display undulating lights and sound, tells time, and alter its actions based on each day’s sunlight cycle. The idea started when I saw a note left in a museum during my time at an artist residency in Dresden, Germany. It said, “I wish time slowed down when I was having fun.” Although the pandemic has veered the original concept into a totally different direction, I’m exceptionally proud of the regenerated ideas and execution that came to fruition in this piece.

Through an amazing partnership between the Columbus Museum of Art and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, it will be on display at the museum’s Greater Columbus exhibition soon. There are so many fun Easter eggs packed into this piece that they each deserve their own explanation. Let’s dive right in!

New Painting & Letter Slated For Cuba-NYC-Ohio Exhibitions

“Absolute: Pendulum”, Oil paint on cherry veneer, paper, thin ply veneer. 12″ x 9″. 8.22.20.

This piece is for a traveling exhibition to Cuba, New York City, & Ohio slated for 2021. The show, titled “Letters from Cuba, Letters from Ohio”, will showcase artists’ visual & written letters hailing from both locations. It is my pleasure to be among a group of excellent artists who have traveled to & taken part in an artist partnership with Cuba. I’m extremely proud of the friendships (both professional & personal) that this organization has been able to nurture. This piece represents a close communication with the friends I’ve made during my visits. You can see some of my inspirations in the gallery below.

If I’ve learned anything from my previous exhibitions in Cuba & the one-two punch of 2020’s global pandemic, it’s safe to say that the dates & locations will remain flexible until closer to the opening. When that time comes, I’ll be sure to let everyone know. The plan is to have simultaneous exhibitions in four Cuban cities in the spring of 2021, followed by a summer showing at the Columbus Museum of Art, before traveling to New York City in the fall. Keep an eye out for new information as it comes in!

Before the pandemic rocked the world, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) announced an exhibit called ‘¡Cuba!’, a bilingual collaboration with the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC) at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Cuba. In conjunction with that exhibition was an invitation to a Community Art Challenge, where artists of all ages were asked to submit work that represented their family, traditions, home, and cultural similarities. I dropped off an oil painting to just weeks before the world saw a global lockdown. The work has been in the museum’s care, waiting the moment when they could responsibly open back up to the public. I’m pleased to announce that COSI is now open and my work, “Absolute: Plumb” is now on display in Heritage & History art gallery. I have several really interesting connections between both COSI and Cuba.  Read onward to see what they are.

Where To Find Free Online Courses: Knowledge For All & What Else To Expect

Where To Find Free Online Courses: Knowledge For All & What Else To Expect

by Daric Gill

Which shape to use for the final sculpture? What kind of geometry will I have to learn for this? Protractors and math tutorials are all I'm working with at this stage. As schools and colleges scramble to adapt to this age of online learning, students and educators are having to reinvent their ideas of education. Formally a college educator myself, I am familiar with the challenges of both sides of this coin. For the past 12+ years, I’ve built a collection of free artist resources for professional development in the creative field.

This article will cover a broader scope, listing searchable databases and online courses for arts and non-arts related interests. The hope is to help build equality and aid in the pursuit of greater knowledge for little or no cost at all! As an added bonus for the artists reading this, I will include a small sentence for each link explaining what to expect in the arts category.

Admittedly, the nuances of hands-on art-making is a particularly hard field to teach online, which is why it’s not as present as history or design-based fields. None-the-less, there are plenty of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) at our disposal and I wish to share some of these resources with you all.
