“Absolute: Balance” Finds Meaning In The Ethereal

New Painting, “Absolute: Balance” Finds Meaning In The Ethereal

by Daric Gill

“Absolute: Balance”, Oil on reclaimed burled maple. 12 1/2” x 12 1/2”. 10.21.18.A dead root winds its way up from the bottom of a burled background. The edges of the painting boil and fade from a dark green to bare wood. Near the bottom-center is a small fluffy cloud that appears to be suspended by two red threads. One thread intertwines with the root, wrapping around it so that it is taught on one side and slack on the other. Absolute: Balance finds itself somewhere between fantasy and reality. HUGE News! 2019 Artist Exchange Residency In Dresden, Germany!

Awarded A Dresden, Germany Artist Exchange Residency!

by Daric Gill

This year has been full of amazing adventures and it looks like 2019 will only get better! I’m ecstatic to announce that I’ve been awarded an artist exchange residency in Dresden, Germany for 2019! Each year the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen (Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony) – offers two Columbus artists the opportunity to undertake a residency in Dresden, Germany, lasting two to three months between March – November. Travel expenses, a small stipend, a living space, and work studio will also be provided as part of the experience.

I’m honestly gobsmacked and completely honored by such a generous residency. This is a prestigious opportunity that only comes available once an artist wins the Visual Arts Fellowship, a merit-based award of funding and exhibition . Last month, I was selected as one of the 2018 fellowship recipients by Greater Columbus Arts Council in conjunction with the Columbus Museum of Art. Past and present fellows can compete with other former winners  for this residency. As you can imagine, the pool of artists are quite amazing and I’m tremendously flattered that I was picked out of such a quality roster of talented individuals.

You can expect plenty of posts from Germany during my time there, as I plan to chronicle my work and experiences there.

A special thanks to:

“Help! Should I Get A Degree In Art?!”: When It Works & When It Doesn’t

“Help! Should I Get A Degree In Art?!”: When It Works & When It Doesn’t

By Daric Gill

There are times when it makes sense and there are times when it doesn’t. In this article I’ll address some questions surrounding this topic.  First, knowing which questions you’re actually asking is important to finding true answers.

“Do I need a degree to be an artist?”

“I need to go to college to get a job, right?”

“College is a TON of money!? Is it worth it?

Each question is justifiable and indeed has its own individual answers. There are plenty of views to wade through. This is my attempt to address each one of those concerns and hopefully cut through some of the mental clutter. Of course, I openly encourage you to consider other views to help gauge where you fall on the matter. Read on for more.
