New! “Absolute: Journey”, A Connection To Collection

The Absolute series of paintings have a tradition of exploring connections we have to each other through personal, yet universal narratives. We fall in love, have intimate struggles, find solace in nature, and navigate personal directions. In Absolute: Journey, I explore what it feels like when we long to capture sensory and emotional experiences in more tangible ways. This painting uses mood and symbolism to narrate the timeless tradition of placing these experiences into our memory. It is a visual description of the sensitive and very personal ways we reflect back on past moments; and how the past is held up to the torch of future’s light.

A thin string is wound tightly around a branch from a Green Hawthorn tree. The string’s loose ends fall to the side. Below lies a well-worn black field journal. Hints of aged paper peek out from the insides. The pages are dog-eared and their contents remain a mystery. The warm wood boasts two faint stripes that parallel each other off-center behind the collection of objects. Five weathered holes pierce the wood in an orderly fashion, posing indirect clues to the wood’s past life.
The Green Hawthorn often shows up in the Absolute series, as it changes with all four seasons– like my artwork. Also known as the “Winter King”, this four-season tree blooms white with flowers in the spring, has tall vibrant leaves in the summer, colorful foliage in the fall, and dawns scarlet pod-berries and exfoliates bark in the winter. The thorns that can sometimes adorn branches are not in this painting. However, they make appearances in other works. “Absolute: Journey” rounds off a new transition that has allowed me to reconsider the way I construct the content in this series.
